Challenge
The client, British Telecom, had seen V! Studios’ 3D gaming work and asked a pointed question: could the same engine be used to build something fundamentally different from a game? Specifically, could it power a virtual town square, accessible through the television and navigable with a standard remote, where subscribers could conduct everyday transactions without ever touching a keyboard?
The concept was ambitious. Banking, video rental, grocery ordering, and other daily tasks would all live within a single, spatially organized environment. Subscribers would move through a 3D space, approaching storefronts and service counters the way they would in a physical town. The interface had to be intuitive enough for users with no technology background, including older adults who found conventional computers inaccessible.
The security architecture had to match the accessibility goal. Users would enter credentials only once, at enrollment. After that, identity was established through the session, not re-entered at every transaction. The environment was a closed system, a controlled digital space that gave subscribers the services they needed without exposing them to the broader internet.
The walled garden model was well-suited to the telecommunications context. The client could offer this environment as a value-added service to broadband subscribers, with each transaction category potentially representing a commercial relationship with a local or national service provider.
Action
V! Studios built the environment using the same 3D engine that had powered its gaming work. The town square was spatially coherent: a navigable environment with distinct storefronts and service locations, each housing a different category of transactions.
To rent a video, a subscriber would walk their on-screen character up to the video store. Inside, a 3D character served as the clerk, guiding the subscriber through genres, directors, or titles. A selection could be rented and either downloaded to the local device or streamed, depending on the available connection. This video-on-demand capability was developed around 1997, years before streaming became an industry standard.
For banking, the same spatial logic applied. The subscriber navigated to the bank, entered, and interacted with a 3D teller to check balances, make deposits, or execute transfers between accounts. The interface was the familiar logic of a physical bank visit, translated into a 3D environment controlled entirely by remote.
Other service categories followed the same model. Each required only navigation and selection. The underlying credential management was handled at the system level, invisible to the user. The design intent throughout was to lower the barrier to participation for people who had been effectively excluded from digital services by the complexity of conventional computers and internet browsers.
Result
The environment was built and functional. The project did not reach deployment. Industry consolidation during this period, marked by a wave of mergers and acquisitions across European telecommunications, changed the client’s priorities and structure before the rollout could proceed. The decision to halt came from outside the engagement. The technology performed as designed.

Studios was asked to solve both, alongside grocery ordering and other daily services, within a single 3D environment controlled by a remote.
The design choices made here- spatial navigation as an accessibility layer, single-enrollment credential management, and a closed and trusted digital environment for non-technical users- anticipate problems that the broader internet did not fully solve for years. The underlying instinct was not to replicate the web on a television screen but to design an entirely different kind of interface suited to a different kind of user.
That instinct is the throughline. V! Studios has always approached technology problems as design problems first. What was being built for this client in the late 1990s required the same combination of engineering depth and design-thinking experience that defines the firm’s work today.
